Nitro 4x4 hits UK in 2007

10 October 2005

  • Nitro concept car will be toned down
  • Production model to appear at Detroit show
  • Designed for on-road use

Dodge has confirmed that the Nitro off-roader will go on sale in the UK in 2007.

The Nitro concept car was on display at last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, but Dodge was unwilling to acknowledge that a production version was in the pipeline. However, the five-seater Nitro will join the Caliber small family car as Dodge’s first mainstream vehicles to be sold in the UK.

The concept car may need to be toned down before it reaches showrooms, although Dodge is keen to keep its distinctive character. The first production-ready versions could be previewed at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

No decision has been made on the exact specifications of the Nitro but, as it uses the same chassis as the new Jeep Cherokee, it’s possible that there could be two and four-wheel-drive versions available.

The Nitro will be longer and wider than the Cherokee and intended for on-road driving, not off. Dodge says there will be a diesel engine, but won’t confirm if it’s the same VW-sourced 2.0-litre TDI engine used in the Caliber.

No prices are being given, but Dodge plans to undercut competitors, which could mean a starting price as low as £16,000.
