Tesla Model S
The Model S deserves its place here on two main fronts. First, it offers twice the real-world range of any other electric car, despite being bigger and heavier than most other electric cars. The big-capacity batteries are to thank for this, but what's even more impressive is that they've been packaged in a way that gives the Tesla as much cabin space as its conventional rivals.
Second is the fact that each Model S proves how effective electric power can be in a luxury car. We've driven the range-topping, £68,700, 416bhp Performance Plus model.
If anything, the Model S feels more brilliantly extravagant on the road than any of its diesel- or petrol-engined competition. Between the huge touch-screen that replaces any switchgear, the silent and brutal acceleration, the smooth ride and the well-weighted controls, it's every bit the relaxing yet exhilarating GT car you'd hope for.
