Car of the Year 2014: Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi Acenta 2WD
The all-new Nissan Qashqai is our Car of the Year. It brings excellence and polish to a class of cars that was already brimming with talent and tempting buys. There's more to it than that, though. Whether you're a company car driver or a private buyer, the costs are low, while comfort, refinement, space and safety are first class. Every last detail has been thought of, down to how you stow the parcel shelf. This complete approach is why the Qashqai is the Car of the Year.
The previous Qashqai was all about comfort, sacrificing fun to achieve it. However, this new version is much more rounded; it feels agile and secure in corners, yet still rides well. Refinement is another strength, because it’s available with a smooth 1.5-litre diesel engine and is brilliant at shutting out wind and road nois e.
Meanwhile, the cabin is roomy enough to keep four six-footers happy, and perceived quality has taken a huge step forward. For all the advancements that have been made in recent years, SUVs are still seen as dirty and inefficient by some people. However, our favourite Qashqai emits less than 100g/km of CO2, so it’s a cheap company car choice.
The news isn’t quite so good for private buyers because prices have gone up compared with the old model’s and there are no discounts at the moment. That said, you’re getting more equipment now, as well as a much better car.
