Driving penalties to increase

The Government has proposed changes to the penalties for seatbelt and numberplate offences.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning also revealed an increase of on-the-spot penalties for seatbelt and numberplate offences taken from foreign drivers. This brings them into line with the 60 fixed penalties charged to domestic drivers.

The Government has also raised the fixed penalty charge for keeping a vehicle with an obscured or missing registration plate the penalty will increase from 30 to 60. This brings the charge into line with the penalty payable for failing to fix the correct type of registration plate to a vehicle.
Assuming the proposals are approved, they will come into effect on February 1, 2011.
