Driving penalties to increase

  • Government proposes increase of penalties
  • Penalty for numberplate offences to double
  • Could come into force from February
The Government has proposed changes to the penalties for seatbelt and numberplate offences.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning also revealed an increase of on-the-spot penalties for seatbelt and numberplate offences taken from foreign drivers. This brings them into line with the £60 fixed penalties charged to domestic drivers.

The Government has also raised the fixed penalty charge for keeping a vehicle with an obscured or missing registration plate – the penalty will increase from £30 to £60. This brings the charge into line with the penalty payable for failing to fix the correct type of registration plate to a vehicle.
Assuming the proposals are approved, they will come into effect on February 1, 2011.
