Hyundai is set for a new model bonanza, with 22 new launches by 2017, according to the company’s European boss, Allan Rushforth.

Speaking to What Car?, Rushforth admitted that some of these were derivatives of existing models and replacements, but ‘at least a third’ are all-new.

One of the most significant arrivals will be the replacement for the i20 small car, due to go on sale at the end of the year. It will be bigger, inside and out, and is likely to have the family look started by the i10 city car. The cheapest members of the line-up will also be powered by the same 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre engines. A hot turbocharged ‘N-badged’ version will also be available.

Arriving shortly after will be a small i20-based SUV, effectively replacing the current ix20 and using the new design language which is previewed by the Intrado concept at next week’s Geneva motor show.

In June, Hyundai will introduce the BMW 5 Series-rivalling Genesis saloon to Europe. It was first seen at the Detroit motor show and ‘will undercut the German competition on price’, according to Rushforth.

However Hyundai’s boss admits that, because it will have only V6 petrol power, it will be a small seller and is really there to ‘showcase Korean technology’. However, he did tell What Car? that a diesel engine version could be developed 'if a business case for it emerges’.
