Most people speed, one in five admits it's dangerous, but the majority think that speed cameras are just there to make money.

Virtually all motorists reckon that speed limits need to be increased on the motorway, and most think three points, or less, for driving at 39mph in a 30mph zone is fair enough.

These are just some of the results from the What Car? Survey on Speed, in which 1264 motorists took part on whatcar.com.

We asked a range of questions about speeding, penalty points, cameras, limits and safety, and while we could easily have predicted some of the results, we were genuinely shocked by others.

For instance, the Department for Transport (DfT) is likely to introduce stiffer fixed penalties for speeding in a new graduated system next year, but the majority of motorists in our survey were in favour of lenient penalties.
