Our cars: Ford S-Max - January
Bright, cold, frosty mornings can be very pretty, but scraping ice off the windscreen is a time-consuming hassle.
With the S-Max, however, I can jump straight into my heated and electrically adjustable driver’s seat (£500 for the seat pack option) and hit a combination defrost button. It switches on the rear window element, redirects the air flow to the windscreen and gets Quickclear on the case.
Quickclear is a network of very fine heating filaments running through the windscreen which evenly heat the glass and leave it entirely free of ice, usually in under a minute.
It’s a standard feature which saves on frozen fingers and removes any temptation to start a journey as soon as a tiny letterbox viewing hole has been chipped away by a credit card. Quickclear is convenient, safe and brilliant.
The filaments are pretty much invisible and, once on the move, the heating and ventilation system is proving to be more than man enough for the big job of keeping the large glazed area of the car clear. There are demisting elements for the rear quarter lights, too, so the S-Max has brilliant visibility, whatever the weather.
