Jaguar XF review

The Jag's big, comfortable, spacious. What it isn't, is a removal van, which gave me a bit of a challenge when a friend asked me to help move a bookcase. The XF was all that we had at hand.

The boot was tried, to no avail; it just wasn't quite wide enough. The only recourse was the back seat, but I held out little hope because of the sloping nature of the door frames.

I needn't have worried. With the front seats slid forward slightly and a little bit of 'to me, to you', the bookcase was squeezed in.

Those door apertures have been designed to accommodate rotund businessmen, and so are bigger than I thought.

I hate to admit it, but: I think I'm too short for the driver's seat in the XF.

I have the same issue with other executive cars, but the Jag's is the worst I've encountered so far. The seatbase is about an inch or so too long for my diddy legs, regardless of how I have the seat set up, so ends up digging into the upper part of my calves. It isn't uncomfortable, just irritating.

The worst part of it all is that I'm not particularly short. At 5ft 5in tall, I'm around average height.

I'm learning to relax behind the wheel. If I'm worried about getting somewhere on time, I've started to leave earlier. I've begun to enjoy audiobooks. No longer do I get frustrated by the actions of people for whom using the inside lane is seen as a sign of weakness. I don't get infuriated by people bumbling along in the middle lane with a phone clamped to their ear

All of this Zen calmness has helped increase the Jag's fuel economy; the average has risen from 41.6mpg to 42.9. The reason this has come to my attention is because for the first time ever, the range-to-empty display reads more than 600 miles following a fuel station visit. It's a good feeling, I'm chilled and I'm saving cash – can't be bad.
