Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series review
Mercedes has made aerodynamic upgrades and fitted race-specification suspension, and the 6.2-litre V8 engine has been tuned to produce 510bhp – 59bhp more than you get in the standard C63.
The Black also comes with wider axles and much bigger brakes, so Mercedes has had to fit deep bumpers with massive air-vents and oversized wings, complete with their own meshed vents to provide extra cooling for the brakes.
With the suspension set so low, there’s very little daylight between the body and the 19-inch AMG alloys, while the bulbous rear diffuser and fat twin exhausts mark the Black out as a very special C-Class Coupe indeed.
What is the 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series like to drive?
The suspension can be adjusted to all-but eliminate body roll, so the ride is firm and the car tends to bobble around over poorly surfaced back roads.
Still, you’ll quickly forgive this the first time you experience the Black’s immense grip.
The super-quick steering means the car darts into bends, too, and that steering provides plenty of feedback, so you can place the front-end with precision.
You just have to be careful when accelerating out of bends, because there’s so much power that it’s easy to get the rear of the car sliding – even when the stability control is switched on.
The Black will blast you to 62mph in a shade over four seconds. Really though, it’s the fact that it accelerates strongly at all revs, with no flat spots, that’ll ring your bell.
So intense is the speed at which the engine picks up revs, you always need to be ready to grab another up-change from the seven-speed paddleshift gearbox, or before you know it, the engine will have hit the rev limiter.
What’s the 2012 Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series like inside?
The cabin is decked out in black trim and features a race-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel that’s trimmed with Alcantara.
You also get telemetry-recording software, which is operated through the central Comand control system, while heavily bolstered sports seats clamp you firmly in place.
Otherwise, the Black Series is pretty similar to a standard C-Class Coupe, so the dashboard is nicely finished – if not £100k nice – and reasonably simple to use.
The Black gets four seats as standard, but the rears are removed on cars with the optional AMG Aerodynamics Package, which costs £6995.
Should I buy one?
If you do you’ll become a member of a very exclusive club; Mercedes is limiting the production run to 600 cars, with just 66 of those coming to the UK.
That, plus the devastating handling and performance, make the Black a very tempting proposition.
Just be aware that it’s far more at home on a racetrack than battered back roads or city streets.
