Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works revealed

The third-generation Mini Cooper S John Cooper Works has been revealed at the Detroit motor show.

What is it?

With the most powerful engine ever featured in a production Mini, the new John Cooper Works Hatch goes on sale in the UK in April 2015.

The new Cooper S JCW is based around the three-door Mini and receives a series of styling upgrades, including a unique front bumper with enlarged air ducts, revised LED headlights, altered wheelarch cladding, wider sills, a more prominent spoiler, a deeper rear bumper and twin centrally mounted, chromed exhaust pipes.

Despite the recent introduction of a new five-door variant of the Cooper S, Mini says there are no immediate plans to use it as the basis of an additional John Cooper Works model.

What engine does it come with?

Power comes from a revised version of the standard Cooper S’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that delivers 228bhp.

Buyers can choose between either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or optional six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

The three-door hatchback is claimed to hit 62mph in just 6.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 153mph in manual guise, while automatic versions reach 62mph in just 6.1 seconds.

The manual returns 42.2mpg while emitting 155g/km of CO2. The automatic achieves 49.7mpg and 133g/km.

What equipment does it come with?

Mini has equipped the JCW with 17-inch alloy wheels and a number of unique touches inside including new front seats, a new steering wheel, a new gear lever and revised instrument graphics.

How much does it cost?

Pricing is yet to be finalised, but it is expected to cost much the same as the previous JCW, so would start at around £22,500.

Can I get a discount?

If you do get a discount on the Mini Cooper S JCW then it won't be a huge one - savings on Minis are never that generous. The current version only has around £500 off according to our Target Price team, and the new model is not expected to be any more discounted than that.
