New Ford Fiesta: more details

Ford has released more details about its new Fiesta supermini, due here in October.

There are two new engines in the Fiesta's line-up, which comprises four petrols and two diesels.

A 1.6-litre diesel will be fitted to the Econetic model, which, along with suspension and aerodynamic modifications, ensure that the green Fiesta emits less than 100g/km of carbon dioxide.

There is also a new 118bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine that can power the Fiesta from zero to 62mph in 9.9 seconds. CO2 emissions for this sporty model are 139g/km and fuel consumption is 47.9mpg.

The three other petrol engines have power outputs ranging from 59bhp to 95bhp.

Special features include an anti-stall function that changes the characteristics of the engine during low-speed manoeuvres.

All Fiestas come with a five-speed manual gearbox, but buyers of the 1.4 petrol can specify a four-speed automatic.

There are six trims available, but all Fiestas will come with driver's knee airbag, steering that adjusts for reach and rake, and electric door mirrors.

The car will be available in three- and five-door bodystyles.

Styling touches include a central instrument stack, which takes its inspiration from the layout of a mobile phone keypad. Ford says this makes the Fiesta's controls more intuitive to use.

Ford's Convers+ system, which allows the driver to control the car's music and sat-nav functions via a control on the steering wheel, is an option, as is Bluetooth connectivity and keyless entry.

Prices are expected to begin from around 8500.
