Saab concept reveals 9-4X 4x4

13 January 2008

This is the Saab 9-4X BioPower concept car, which will be formally unveiled at the Detroit motor show this weekend.

Powered by a 300bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that runs on E85 bio-ethanol, the car features Saab's XWD four-wheel-drive system, as well as innovations such as a glass roof and a ski storage area.

However, the real significance of the car is that its looks are identical to those of the production model, which will go on sale in Europe later this year.

Saab says the four-seater has been designed to appeal to a more youthful buyer, and it has been created as part of the company's push to have a model in every market segment.

Engines are expected to include a 300bhp 2.8-litre V6 petrol and 250bhp 2.9-litre V6 diesel, as well as turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol and 1.9-litre diesel units.

The BioPower engine in this concept car is expected to go into production by 2010.
