Which VW engine have I just ordered?

Q: Can you tell me if the diesel engine in the Volkswagen Passat Estate is the older 'Pumpe Duse' engine, or the new common-rail unit? I've just ordered one, but forgot to ask the dealer.

A: Only the Volkswagen Tiguan has been fitted with the new common-rail diesel engine so far, so the Passat you've ordered will come with the old Pumpe Duse (PD) engine.

It'll take two years for the rest of the Volkswagen range to get the new engine, although the Passat is expected to get the new units within 12 months.

Don't worry, though, as the 2.0 TDI PD is still a fine engine, if a little on the noisy side.

The Passat was our Family Car of the Year in 2007, and still comes highly recommended.
