For Supercar-slaying pace, neutral, grippy handling, standard four-wheel drive and seven-speed twin-clutch automatic will appeal. It’s lots of fun in general.

Against Unforgiving ride, high price, not as practical or quite as fun as the mechanically identical A45 AMG.

3 out of 5 stars

The hottest Mercedes CLA has the pace to impress. However, with rivals like the BMW 335i costing less, you need to really love the CLA 45 AMG to justify its price.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

The Mercedes CLA offers four-door coupe styling at a lower price than a CLS or an Audi A7.

However, take looks out of the equation and there are better alternatives. A BMW 320d auto will cost you about the same as a CLA 220 CDI, yet is more fun to drive, rides more comfortably and has a classier cabin.

The manual-only CLA 180 petrol is cheaper, but still not cheap, although it does come with an impressive list of standard kit.

If you're prepared to make a few compromises for those sleek looks, stick with the more comfortable, entry-level Sport model.

The CLA 45 is an emotive purchase, and if you’re taken with the blend of looks and outrageous performance, you won’t be disappointed. Just be aware that there are more rounded rivals available for less, including the BMW 335i or even a 135i hatchback. Both of those options are a bit slower but joyous to drive, whilst being more practical and relaxing to live with on a daily basis.
