For Trend models come with sporty styling touches to make them look racier, and the engine provides reasonable performance when you work it.

Against The Yaris isn’t as good to drive as many mainstream rivals, and this is a fairly expensive version of the car.

Not a bad choice for the style-conscious Yaris buyer, but we reckon that the sweet spot lies elsewhere in the range.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

We'd avoid the entry-level 68bhp three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine because it’s very slow, even when you rev it hard. It generates too much noise and vibration, too. The same is true of the 89bhp 1.4-litre diesel, but at least it gives decent performance. The 98bhp 1.33 petrol is smoother and perkier, but our favourite version is the Hybrid, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor. It’s the priciest Yaris, but because it one of the cheaper hybrids on sale, we can see a reason to buy it. There isn’t much reason to buy the more conventional car when it’s so far behind its supermini rivals in so many areas.

The entry-level T2 model is pretty sparse, but TR comes with alloys and air-con, plus a touch-screen stereo system that also incorporates Bluetooth and a reversing camera. The Yaris comes with a five-year, 100,000-mile warranty, which along with Toyota's reputation for bullet-proof reliability, should give owners great peace of mind.
