I have had the car since April 2007 and have now done nearly 27,000 miles.
My overall impression of the car is that it is excellent for the type of long distance motoring I have to do. It is almost silent at speed and has an excellent ride, and I genuinly look forward to using it.
My only day-to-day crticisms are that the seats are not as comforatble as my previous Jaguar X-Type and along with other reviewers I have also noted an ongoing thirst for oil. However, it is clear that this appears to be normal as when I received the car from the dealer I was given a smart holder containing a bottle of oil!
Apart from these issues, the only real neagative note was that the car had to return to the dealer within the first three weeks to have what turned out to be three missing gear-box housing bolts replaced. Apparently these had either been lose or missing from day 1!
It is a shame to have to report such an issue because my overall experience of the car has been very good and I will almost certainly replace with another A6 Avant when I am next due to change at the end of 2009.
This is my 3rd A6 in 7 years and definitely is in a different league from the previous model.
I have now covered 20,000 trouble-free miles. The only downside of ownership was the cost of replacement of 4 tyres at 19,000 miles.
Quattro gave superb grip in the wet and icy conditions last winter threw at me and it would seem strange now going back to two wheel drive dynamics. The 2.7 litre diesel has amazed many passengers who have failed to detect any diesel rumble.
Bose stereo is a must though on the spec. list with concert hall sound quality.
A great car...
Have manual registered May 07. Done 15k miles. Disappointing mpg - averaging 35-36, barely better than E39 525d auto I had before (33-34), & I do a fair few long journeys. I don't like tugs at steering in 2nd and 3rd in wet under brisk acceleration. Worst disappointment is road noise - but that might just be tyres (Pirelli - will try to get F1's when replaced, fronts need doing in a couple of k I think - as they were excellent on BMW) and might be emphasised by very quiet engine and lack of wind noise. I don't find the gearbox particularly good (lumpy). Quite a few blind spots around the car - pillars enormous giving poor visibility. Sports seats are good, dvd sat nav works well. The car looks fabulous and scores highly on safety. Overall prefer a BMW (rear wheel drive) even though that means 2.0d for the same money and an appalling stereo. The Audi's Bose was improved by tweaking by ICE expert - not well set up as standard, disappointing for extra money that not set up right to start with.
I am experiencing problems with my audi a6 avant purchased july 06 it`s a 2.0ltr tdi cost £30,255 has a heap of extras ive put 10 ltrs of oil in it since new and its been taken away from me twice on a low loader the second time only 2 days after its first service its covered 19000 miles and i have informed the dealership and even took the car to a different dealer to look at about the excessive oil they told me to wait until the first oil service it would be rectifed . I wish i had rejected the car when it was taken away the first time on a low loader. My car was serviced in the dealership last friday 9th nov 07 it had a full service told them again about the oil consumption when i picked the car up it had also had a software update on the erg valve which caused the engine sensor fault previously. My car was parked on my drive all day sat and sun tues morn i took my children to school the car on the way misfired vibrated violently and once again there was an engine sensor fault and the car was taken away on a low loader need i say more i am now trying to gain a pro rata refund off the dealer and unfortunately even having owned 2 previous audis agree with Mr Richard Minkler don`t buy the A6 2.0ltr tdi either. There are too many comments regarding the same faults that have been published on this website If my problems are not resolved i will be contacting watchdog as i think this matter should be investigated for such a high priced vehical. WISH I HAD KEPT MY A4
