Critics were hard on the Crossfire when it first appeared. It was punching above it's weight by being overpriced but a second hand Crossfire Roadster is a tasty treat for anyone looking for the alfresco driving experience. It is a design masterpiece, looking like a concept car. The engine is muscular yet smooth, especially with the auto gearbox. Plenty of safety gizmos give you confidence to put the crossfire through it's paces. However, this is slightly diluted by the lack of "feel" from the wheels through the steering, due to the reverse ball steering system. For that reason I scored the car 4 rather than 5 stars, because you don't quite get the full on sports car thrill that you want and expect. The cabin is sporty and comfortable, with everything you could want for an enjoyable drive, including a thumping stereo. It's true that the shape of the car makes the rear window impossibly difficult to see out of but, once you get a feel for how little of the car is actually behind you, parallel parking is not as difficult as it seems at first. I haven't had it long enough to incur too many costs, apart from filling it with petrol rather too often, but there are plenty of electric motors to go wrong (roof, seats etc) that would certainly be expensive to replace once they start failing. However, you know this when you buy it and if you want a cheap car to run buy a Kia! Overall, a really cool car which I am enjoying immensely. Now, if it would just stop raining.........
I've had my Crossfire for almost three years. She's eaten up the Donnington Park race track with amazing roadholding and I love to drive her along the coast roads with the roof down.
It's a bit tight on space for a weekend away, and my husband, at 6ft 5in tall, is only comfy with the roof off. At least that means he doesn't use her often! She's a head turner!
This is the nicest mid-range convertible you could own. With it's Merc running gear and Chrysler body you have the best of all worlds.
I found the insurance quite reasonable - only 3 quid a month more than my Mondeo Zetec S.
Mine is a 54 model and has done 94,000 miles it runs like a dream.
Not too bad on the fuel I find but has all the guts you need.
I have had this car a week and here are my initial thoughts.
It's a hoot to drive, with tons of power across the rev range and masses of grip from the 255 rear tyres. The auto 'box is really smooth with the autostick. The cabin is somewhat let down by cheap plastic centre console, but there is enough room for me to squeeze my 6ft 2in frame into the supportive seats, which have 8 way adjustment and allow you to get into a comfortable driving position.
The sound system is as great as is the exhaust note. The engine and running gear are all Mercedes, and the car feels very robust with little scuttle shake. The roof release is a bit of a pain until you get the hang of it, though - you need to have the boot correctly configured to accept the folded roof, and the roof requires unlatching and pushing free of the window frame before you can engage the electric mechanism.
Even with the boot configured for the roof down, there is still plenty of room for shopping or a weekend away, but you can forget about golf clubs. The optional wind deflector is well worth fitting, because it allows you to carry on a conversation at motorway speeds without shouting.
Running costs are OK, but it is a 3.2-litre motor, so it likes its petrol, and the car is group 19 insurance. Rear visibility with the roof up is pretty poor, so parking may be an issue, but the rear overhang is very short - you are almost sitting on the rear axle.
