    My car

I knew this car wasn't really a drivers car but in terms of driveability and handling it has lived up to my expectations and is quite enojyable to drive. The consumption averages around 48-49mpg on a mixed cycle, but I have had over 60mpg out of it on a sedate long run.

Cabin is a touch cheap but well equipped - a rattle from an air vent is annoying but minor, and small piece of trim has come adrift on the dash right by the windscreen. These both started when the car was about 4 years old, it is an O2 plate and I've had it for 3 years.

I have to say it has been incredibly reliable and very cheap to service - I have had only brakes, pads etc to deal with in three years, last years annual service and MOT was £145 which I was more than happy with.

Yes I'd like more of a drivers car but to me this is a great compromise, giving me reasonable performance with really cheap ownership costs. I would say DO NOT BUY NEW.

    My car

My Stilo is a 1.4 hatchback. It has done 23,546 miles and is just out of warranty. I had a recall for the front suspension done, then i heard knocking from front and - low and behold - it was a broken spring, which Fiat dealer refused to repair under warranty.

    My car

You get a lot of car for your money: alloys, CD player, huge 'sky roof', traction control, etc. The cabin is comfortable and the interior seems spacious. Plenty of thought has gone into the cabin's extras.

I have owned the Stilo for 2 1/2 years and, with one minor exception, the bodywork and interior trim have stayed sound.

The ride is mediocre, the handling reasonable but, in terms of power and agility, the car does not impress. Fuel consumption is OK.

BUT... It is not reliable and it has cost me a fortune: any savings made in the purchase price have been eaten up in servicing and repair costs. This has been partly my own fault for continuing to use a FIAT main dealer in the mistaken belief that their expertise will keep the car running better.

Servicing costs are very high. Engine electrical faults are legion. Bulbs blow like Christmas Tree lights - especially the stop light. The nearside front light cluster is totally inaccessible without removing the front bumper, which you'll probably want the garage to do, leaving you with a £60 bill to change an £8 bulb!

Starting the car brings it's own excitements: will it start quietly or will I get a scary message? Switching off and on again usually solves the problem. Except every time there really is a problem.

The Stilo is the most expensive car I have ever owned and not in a good way.

It is the last FIAT I will ever buy and I cannot recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable and cheap car.

    My car

My Stilo is really starting to grow on me. It's got so many nice touches, like somewhere to put my sunglasses, a proper computer, really good windscreen washers. This is the first car I've owned that wasn't a disappointment after driving a rental car. Now it's the rental cars I find disappointing!

I drive fairly gently, and routinely get over 45mpg, petrol. If I drive really easy I can push the average up to nearly 50mpg. And I've kept fuel receipts - it's within 1mpg of reality.

Sure, it's not perfect: I wish the darn radio wouldn't come on every time I start the car; I wish the parcel shelf didn't fit so badly; I wish the car wasn't so anal about me driving without my seatbelt on for over ten metres, and I wish it didn't have such a warped sense of humour: after vigorously scraping ice off the windows, I'll start the car and it'll beep at me and say "danger of ice!". No s**t, stilo!

Oh, and the CD player doesn't like CD-R's. It stops working, but won't give them back. Have to do surgery on the cd multichanger to get them back. Ugh. I just don't use the cd player. (I don't own any real CDs.)

And the driver door used to not fit *quite* right, lots of wind noise above 50mph. My mechanic put a little soundproofing at the top of the frame and that makes a great seal. No more wind noise.

But these are minor niggles. It's a joy to drive and it's cheap to run. I *heart* my stilo.
