i bought my 1999 V reg escort after i wrote off my focus, its a dream to drive although you can tell that its quite old with the cabin design. I'm the second owner of this car its done 37,500 miles only with full service history for £900 i think for that money the bloke i bought it off thought it was expensive i see it as day light robbery i.e me getting it for £900 plenty of grunt, great handling although i think he seats could have been more supportive really. The fit and finish inside is excellent, no rattles or squeaks, cd player air con electric windows (none of which i had on the focus i wrote off) i dont know why i didn't buy one of these in the first place WELL DONE FORD!
I bought this car for £4000 with 40,000 miles on the clock in early 2004 and it never let me down once - a great car to live with and drive.
I recently sold it with 75,000 miles and upgraded to a Ford Focus petrol - in some ways I wish I had kept the old diesel Escort. I always got 45mpg and I don't drive with a style aimed at saving fuel!
On the back roads up north, this car had more than enough power to overtake safely, and have some fun on the windy bits.
The only problem was quite high insurance (group 8) - and some rust on the rear wheel arches.
If you can find one of these with a low mileage, it's well worth the £800 or so you would pay.
Brought this car a few months ago for £600 to be honest I only brought as a stop gap! I find it fairly fun to drive and has enough power to drive on the motorway easily. I have kind of fallen in love with it in some ways, may be due to it being desirable when I was first driving!
All in all its a good choice if you want something very cheap but still with a decent engine!
The car I'm reviewing is a Bahama Blue 1991 Ford Escort Encore 1.3 which I have owned for 3 years. I know its history as it was my dad's previous car, indeed I first had a drive in it when he got it in 1992.
It has done 43,000 miles from new and has cost just £20 (for a brake hose) to get it through the last MOT having gone straight through its previous 2 MOTs.
It's always been garaged. Despite that though there is the usual rear wheel arch rust on the offside as well as some more rust where the o/s front wing joins the sill. Typical Escort rust which will be fixed soon before it takes hold.
On the road the engine is surprisingly quiet, although lacking in power at times. The 5 speed gearbox is nice and smooth though.
Handling isn't up to modern standards but reasonable, helped probably by the 185/60R14 tyres fitted to the Encore model.
This model also has central locking and a rear spoiler on the boot and there's also a Webasto sunroof fitted as standard as well as an anti-theft alarm which is activated simply by locking the driver or passenger doors.
All in all then quite a well-equipped car for its day although obviously Escorts have a dated feel compared to models like the Focus.
