I honestly don't think this car is that bad. It is very easy to live with and the perfomance is all right too.
Watch out for an idle speed valve fault - it's quite common with Escorts. The car often wants to go faster and it is quite comfortable to drive. The handling may not be to everyone's liking as the steering feels lightweight, but all in all it's not a bad car.
To be honest, I have owned a Ford Escort Si previously, and that car prompted me to buy this one.
It has been nothing but trouble since day one! I am experiencing failed electrics, grinding coming from the front driver's side, and a harsh judder when breaking. I have checked the disks and pads, and they seem fine. The car can also makes a loud click when going over speed bumps as if something is loose.
This car does exactly what it claims to do. It's not exciting to drive but it is a comfortable mile-muncher! With air-con, CD-RDS radio, central locking, electric windows, etc, it's well equipped.
It's far more comfortable than our previous VW Polo. We have experienced problems with garages being unfamiliar with Escort diesel engines, and ordering the wrong parts, thus causing delays. It's boring, but reliable, and serves us very well as a second family car - as well as being our first choice for longer motorway runs.
I love this car. I've always wanted one and it lives up to what i expected - it's nice and quick, and good looking. It could do with more electric gadgets, though ie sunroof etc
