Bought for the sole purposes of doing 20k a year getting me to and from work, and providing relatively safe, comfy transport for the family at weekends.
Total mileage now 120k, and apart from two minor problems, the car has needed basic maintenance only. I've serviced it twice as per Ford's recommendation (using genuine Ford parts and fluids) and replaced a headlight bulb, a couple of tyres, and a set of brake pads. An engine mount and a CV joint were replaced as precautions after early signs of trouble. Total maintenance spend over 20k is about £275.
The TD engine is well off the pace compared to current diesels, but it's reliable and frugal. I'm averaging 45 mpg with a mixture of motorway commuting and local running around at weekends, with 48 mpg easily achievable if treated gently. It consumes no oil or other fluids, starts instantly, and isn't smoky even under hard acceleration.
Handling, ride and steering are all excellent, with near perfect weighting of the controls, and stacks of feel. The heavy engine causes some understeer in the wet, but overall the handling and steering feel shame many newer, lower mileage cars I've driven.
The interior suffers from some cheap looking materials, but it seems tough enough. The driving position and seat comfort are both excellent. Build quality is good, and with A/C, CD, elec mirrors and windows, a heated screen and central locking (all work fine), the kit list generous.
The car has exceeded my expectations.
I had this car for 4 months now.I got the 2.5 v6 automatic version. The car is ok.Petrol cost is what I expected.I was told by 2 different mechanics that this car although it's a 170 bhp can not and should not be pushed to much. They were telling me that at 5000 rev. there is a chance that you will blow the headgasket and it costs around £1000 to replace!!
I also recently had a problem with automatic gearbox! The servo came off the gearbox twice and it was due to the problem with the actual spot where the servo is placed!!If it comes off again I will need to change the gearbox which costs £1500!!! This is the second Mondeo I owned. The firs one was a 1.6 l reg and this is 1998 r with 91000 on!!! All I can say is I WILL NEVER BUY ANY CAR MADE BY FORD AGAIN!!!.Therefore I got mine fixed and selling it for £1500....
I have just purchased a Ford Mondeo si L reg. My old vauxhall astra didnt pass its m-o-t so i bought the Mondeo. I read the reviews and went ahead. After driving such a tank of a car before the Mondeo is such a better ride! Its smooth and EASY is the best word i can use to describe it. Brilliant car!
I recently purchased this car, which is the rare RSA saloon, not the five-door (that choice in the menu wasnt there to pick).
It's a 1399 V-registered car, which I picked up for £2350, and as far as I'm concerned, it's the best money I have ever spent. I fell in love with the purr of the V6 on the test drive.
It has great equipment, it handles like a hot-hatch, and it can give people in more expensive cars a good scare (eg Audi A4 3.0 Quattros).
There have been a few bad points, such as leaking back lights and high tyre noise, but that was due to the idiot I bought it from having cheap 205/40s on a set of 17-inch alloy wheels.
A full set of 215/45s from Pirelli have now made it feel and look like a totally different car and I just want to drive it all day every day.
There is the high fuel cost, but, if you want to buy a car like this, that is something you have to live with.

Owned for 1 year, as family runabout Pros good size, general build quality, powershift gearbox, good to drive, low costs Cons handling slighly…
Had this car for 90k from new. A 56 plate. In over 2,000,000 miles driven this one has broken down the most of any car I have had. DO NOT get a 2.0…
