Had my 2003 2.0 litre EX Tourer for 2 years & found it a pleasure to live with. Mine’s fitted with optional body kit, city pack side protection, 17" alloys, roof bars, parking sensors, space saver wheel & fitted load area tray. Pro’s: Build quality, absolute reliability, clever one handed folding rear seat design and that surprisingly useful powered tailgate. The engine is responsive & flexible particularly once used to using it at the slightly higher rev range than is normal in other cars, the handling very stable in wet & windy conditions (but I do agree with comments about some lack of steering feel), comfort levels particularly with the front seats being superb! Cons: Lack of space for ones right foot when on cruise control. Compared to my previous larger 2001 Mondeo Ghia X estate, the Honda is fitted with less toys. I miss the Mondeo's self levelling suspension, heated front screen, keyfob closure of windows & sunroof, xenon headlights & switchable traction control. Honda dealer service is slightly pricey. I've heard complaint that fitment of optional 17" alloys makes ride comfort poor. Can't comment on 16" rims but the factory option 17" alloys cause me no complaint although front tyre wear does appear to be an issue. Tyres on my car were nearly new when bought at 29k miles. My mostly careful 14k miles have nearly worn out the front tyres suggesting circa 15k miles use before each change of the front pair.
I’ll certainly consider buying another newer Accord!
Sorry Mr Palmer yorkshire i'm afraid you've got it wrong! I have owned a 92'prelude for 9 years and its build quality is a lesson to all car makers. Consistently Honda comes out tops in the JD power surveys. Everything still works on my car. It is a simply stunning car and attracts praise from all who travel in it. Structurally sound like a proper sports car with its 4wheel steer scalpel sharp turn-in good steering feedback composed ride granted tyre noise is an issue but other than that, overall wonderful! It was Whatcars coupe of the year 3 years running back in its pomp among which the corrado VR6 was a rival. Accord I tried was a stunning cruiser. Lovely seats, very composed ride, stable, stunning gearchange typical Honda then and really good if not prelude rivalling steering. Brilliant seat folding mechanism and space granted not a looker. Compared with my partners fathers Audi A4 it is never out of the garage there are always electrical gremlins issues with hydraulics and other than the good paintwork and dashboard the ride is abysmal it understeers like a supertanker the ride is choppy at best and as for the refinement or should that be lack of refinement. What do you expect from a VW sourced engine noisiest and most clattery diesels on the market! I have filled ownership rating as 4 stars due to several magazines comments, as I have not owned an accord. They seem generally satisfied with overall running costs.
I have run this car since May 2005 when it was one year old. Overall very good and when you wrap in the quality service from the dealers (especially Avonvale Honda in Solihull) it is almost excellent.
In terms of the driving experience the steering is a bit wooden, and on the 17" wheels there is a lot of road noise. Pleanty of power though and a very comfortable long distance cruiser.
Very few niggles over the years and none was a real problem, eg- the boot lid motor failed (replaced under warranty) and timing chain problems at 115,000 miles and 4 1/2 years old (amazingly also sorted under warranty).
Running costs have been okay. I have never managed to achieve the claimed 48mpg but once you take into account the warranty work done without quibble and the general lack of problems it is very cheap car to own.
I drove one of these for two years as a company car along the M4 corridor mostly, but also around some country roads on occasion. I would get another if it was on the company car list; it comes with lods of toys, all of which work reliably. It was fun to drive and could also carry ridiculous amounts of stuff with the seats down. If I had to be picky, I'd say the paint chips a bit too easily as it didn't cope with the slight dings from other people's doors in the car park as my Golf, which is indestructible. The electric tailgate is brilliant, but I had two periods when it seemed to squeak like it hadn't shut properly, fixed by the excellent dealer. Finally, the fuel consumption wasn't as good as I'd hoped, partly because it's so easy and fun to drive it hard. I got an overall average of 41, which I was once able to get up to 52 on a motorway run, so maybe it was my heavy right foot. In terms of a practical family car, the only car I've driven that I'd choose over the Accord is a 520d SE.
