I changed to a Terracan last December and was pleasently surprised by the fantastic pulling power it has and how well it drives on the road.
The reviews predictibly are unfair on Hyundai vehicles, but if you want a proper 4x4 with plenty of room away from the badge nonsense, you will be impressed by the amount of car you do in fact get for your money.
To get full electrics, climate control, heated door mirrors etc..etc, with only 32mpg then you can't go wrong. I managed to pick up my new Terracan for £16.695 with privacy glass, floor mats and private reg transfer included for no extra cost.
Having purchased this car on the February 1 2006 - it is the worst 4x4 I have ever owned. To drive this car on an uneven road you are taking you life in your hands - it wanders all over the road at any speed. It has been back in the garage at least five times and all I am told is that this is normal for a Terracan. If i could aford to change it, I would. Do not buy one.
This is the best car I have owned. I don't tow anything, I live out of town, and mud is no problem. As they say, 'car first, badge second,' as I payed cash and got all the extras for £17,500 for a new one. In another three years, I will get another one - well done, Hyundai.
I have owned an 04 model (with 05 spec) since last September after owning a Series I Discovery. Forget the negative reports - this car is fantastic! On the road, the power of the 2.9 diesel is awesome - it's quiet and smooth, and handles well for a big car.
It's a bit early to comment on running costs, because the motor was pre-registered and had only done 150 miles. When it's properly run in, it will be even more powerful. Equipment levels are extremely good, but I'm not overly keen on the plastic wood trim in the centre console.
I tow an Abbey GT418 caravan, which, although it's a single-axle caravan, is very heavy. You don't even notice it behind the Terracan, though! The car's fit and finish is superb, and with a long warranty period, you have no worries. Whatever Hyundai replaces it with, it will have to be one helluva motor.
