    My car

After all the hype on this new engine I was prepared for a let down.

You know what expectations are like...and I also tend to go against the trend. But for this Jag, I cannot really fault it at all. It has power and poise and is superbly refined.

I suppose that is one of the downsides for those expecting to be thrown around - the car just doesn't do that. All you need to remind you is to watch the rear view mirror, and see the other cars disappearing into the distance.

Build quality is as good as any other and the slightly retro styling just adds to the charm of the S-type. I can understand some of the comments from reviewers who decry the car's competitiveness but once more this comes back to expectations.

The S-type is a real Jag and the 2.7 diesel engine does the marque proud.

THIS IS MY SECOND JAG, THE FIRST BEING 3.0 LITRE X-TYPE. IT WAS AN EXCELLENT CAR, BUT I RATE THIS S-TYPE AS BY FAR A BETTER CAR TO RIDE IN AND AS A MORE REFINED VEHICLE. THE BOOT IS NOT AS BIG AS YOU WOULD EXPECT, WITH A CD AUTO-CHANGER IN PLACE, PUTTING TWO SUITCASES SIDE BY SIDE IS A STRUGGLE HOWEVER, A JAG IS A JAG AND I CAN'T SEE ME BUYING ANY OTHER MAKE FROM NOW ON.

    My car

Amazing - I bought the diesel after reading rave reviews. My brother (a mechanic) wouldn't believe me when I told him it was a diesel.

The autobox is smooth as silk when changing gears, I only notice the revs dropping most of the time. Yet in Sport mode it flies down country lanes with the perfect growl.

Its handling isn't as good as my previous car's (an MX-5) but for something this size, it corners well with no roll, the steering is direct and gives excellent feedback and is still "chuckable".

All this and a smooth cosseting ride in town too. I buy my cars as stress relief (I am a teacher after all) - and I can say I've never been less stressed!

What would I change? A few more miles per gallon wouldn't go amiss but it's doing roughly what the MX-5 did - and I get four seats and air-con! But other than that, it's perfect. Maybe an estate version would open up the last market sector to this British wildcat!

    My car

For a big car, the ride and handling is excellent. If you are doing 20,000 miles a year plus, the servicing cost make it an expensive option. I love the luxurious feel and sweet-sounding engine. Combine this with the Jaguar brand, and you have a world-class package.
