I have had this car since November. I took a day out to test drive most of the usual suspects - a Mercedes C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 etc. The X-type was the last test drive of the day, and as soon as I sat in it a broad smile appeared on my face!
Sure, the BMW stuck like glue to the road and gave the best handling, but the Jaguar (in addition to great handling and performance) just oozes an understated elegance and refinement... on a reasonable budget to boot.
Even after three months, that smile still appears every time I sit in the car. My only gripe so far is that the car is screaming out for an automatic gearbox, which I understand will be available from March (damn!).
Bought the car in December and both the car and the buying experience through the Chichester garage (Harwoods) was excellent. The car has a smoothness and quality feel about it and having test driven BMWs is a much better car. Driving it is a real joy and the 2.2D gives an excellent performance, particularly acclerating in 3rd and the 6th gear makes for excellent cruising on motorways. The standard fittings on the SE model are great and much better than any of the rivals. In short I am delighted .
Have been driving our SE 2.0 Diesel for 2 years, and can't fault its performance. Fine round town, brilliant on the motorway, ace on long, fully laden drives with 2 adults and 2 children. However, since Feb this year it has suffered an ongoing "not starting" fault. Turn the key, and you get a click from the starter motor, but not enough to turn the engine. Car has been back to Jag main dealer seven times, and each time they tell me it's fixed, (other than the one time they couldn't replicate the fault) but they just can't or won't fix it. It's back in today, and I've just about had enough. Has anyone else had a similar experience? How do I get them to sort it? Warranty is up soon...
This is an excellent car in every respect, which has been good to drive and very reliable. The engine is smooth, powerful and economical.
Only issues have been exhaust smoke on acceleration and some dirt in the fuel problems in almost 80,000 miles. The seats could be more comfortable.
However the X-type now desperately needs updating and the range extending with, for example, the excellent AWD system available on the diesel!
Compared with the Audi range it's pathetic! It hasn't really been touched in the past six years- Jaguar has the technology, so spend a little money and create a competitive range!
