After purchasing a brand new Sportage 4wd XS in April 2008 I have had endless problems. After a couple of small faults the biggest and main problem seems to be a hesitation that Kia refer to as normal and acceptable and not a fault. After driving the car for the past 2 months there is an intermittant 'flat spot' - hesitation. After numerous trips to the garage, courtesy cars - never another sportage - we still have the same problem. I have now requested a refund or asked for a new vehicle which I have been told that wont be happening. After dealing with the principal at Kia I was taken aback with his lack of customer service skills - Aftersales is obviously not one of his best skills. After speaking with several different people within kia they have now confirmed there is a hesitation on some of the latest models. I have now been told that the level of performance of the Sportage is 90-95% which is classed as acceptable from Kia UK. I have explained that when I spend nearly £18,000.00 on a brand new car I expect 100 if not 110% performance. I was not informed at the time of buying that this was the performance level or that it would have a hesitation that hopefully, so I am told by the service manager, will rectify with the more miles I do, maybe use eco friendly diesel or hopefully in a couple of months time there will be a new update out to rectify the hestiation. So although Kia think the drive ability level is acceptable - I do not.
I bought the SPORTAGE deisel new in 2005, as a LHD export model. Fantastic value for money,especially after owning Land Rovers for many years. Now run for three years and NOTHING has been touched - does just what it says on the tin. Very quiet, comfortable long distance cruiser,excellent four wheel drive system used constantly during the Winter to access ski resorts, nothing stops it! BUT - this is an Automatic model - without doubt the WORST Auto box I have ever used; so bad as to be dangerous in many situations. Power just dies and you wait wait wait for it to change down or up, especially when you need it at junctions,slip roads etc. KIA dealers say this is due to "compromise tolerances" (?)and is "normal" !! No offers made to rectify or change this dreadful piece of engineering.As a result also get very poor economy VERY DISSAPOINTED.So much for the 5 year warranty ! If you go for this model then choose the 6 speed manual which may also help with the engines inherent lack of power ( now rectified in 2008 model)
This vehicle has inherent steering (pulling to left)and floor covering faults(clicking every time I lift my foot to operate the clutch) since delivery on 1st March 2008 (2 months ago). It has been returned to the dealer on four different occasion for up to three days at a time for the same faults and the repairs are still very unsatisfactory. The dealer has contacted KIA on a number of occasions requesting information as to how to rectify the faults and their recommendations, I believe, has been carried out without success. On telephoning customer services at KIA's head office I was more or less told that it was no concern of theirs and take it further with Phoenix.
This has taken the joy of having a new car away and I can only say the service received has been poor.
I am a mechanic to trade working within the motor industry and have a good number of years under my belt. These faults should have been picked up at the Pre-delivery inspection and repaired before delivery of the vehicle was allowed. Overall this is a VERY BAD state of affairs which should never have happened.
Well there you have it, in a nutshell, steering and floor covering faults causing major problems and inconvenience which, it seems, cannot be repaired using the latest state of the art equipment and where KIA's boffins do not know how to rectify the problem and their customer services do not want to know, is this kind of service of an acceptable quality? I DON'T BELIEVE IT IS.
I originally planned to buy a Freelander but was shocked by the amount of body roll and the noisy engine (it's great on the motorway though) - I have no idea how this vehicle gets five stars in reviews.
Then I looked at Toyota RAV4s and Mitsubishi Outlanders. I almost bought a RAV4 but my wife did not like the big barn door on the back.
A friend told us to look at the Kia Sportage and I couldn't believe how good it was by comparison.
I bought the Sportage Titan and a RAV4 home to review (myself and a few mates) in detail and I'm sorry, but the Sportage is the better-made vehicle! I did a good deal and bought the Titan. It has not disappointed me in any way to date.
It's very practical, drives smoothly and quietly up motorway and handles the odd bit of off-roading rather well.
Currently I'm getting 37mpg but it has only a couple of thousand miles on the clock. I have studied the guarantee and can't find any 'get-out' so I will believe Kia!
Forget the badge - buy a really good car and have £10,000 left in your pocket compared with a Freelander!
