    My car

I have had four E-Class cars over past seven years. I have had problems with every one of them - from the failure of the electrical system to seized wheel bearings to having paintwork problems being rectified under warranty.

I have had binnacle LED failures, background lighting bulbs failing on the binnacle on a regular basis, and lots of niggling little problems.

Overall, I have been increasingly disappointed with the reliablility of the car and Mercedes customer service. At the beginning, when car was in for service, the exterior would be washed and the interior hoovered and the glass cleaned and the wood polished.

Now I'm lucky if it gets a wash.

Will I buy another? Maybe, but the customer service has to improve dramatically. I have to go now, off to buy a BMW 5 Series.

    My car

I bought my E240 in Germany in 1999. It now has 80,000 miles and has never given me any trouble. The only problem is the terrible flat spot when wanting to accelerate quickly otherwise it is a pleasure to drive. I also have a 2002 E270 CDI, which is excellent to drive, but it has given much more trouble including a blown turbo and annoying intermittent electrical problems I will certainly be buying another E Class when I'm due to change either car.

    My car

This car is an absolute dream to own and drive. The BMW 5 Series, which I was also considering, was not a patch on this Merc.

The car drives more smoothly, is more economical and is far more spacious than its BMW rival.

The cabin oozes class and and the dash is tidily laid out with the controls comfortably situated and easily accesible by the driver. Most impressive in all areas!

    My car

The E240 Avantgarde drives well and often gains looks of admiration from others. The running costs in terms of petrol are pretty good as I am averaging 25-28mpg.

I think that the room within, particularly in the back, is a bit cramped for the taller person but, as I am in the front, this is not too bad. However, it is noticeable when a taller person sits behind you, whereby I have to move my seat forward to compete.

I think the sound system is impressive (10 speakers) with good clarity in the treble and vocals, whilst the bass is deep rich and pure.

In terms of maintenance costs, I do not yet know as at this time I am some 3k away from the next service (my first), although just today the computer now tells me my brakes need attention "visit the workshop".

All in all, having had the car for some seven months now, I have experienced a couple of problems, both of which came with the car when delivered despite the assurances provided by the dealer of the meticulous process they go through prior to the car being despatched. (The car was 18 months old when purchased.)

One was a foglight problem, which took a while to resolve, and the other more worryingly being wheel and steering allignment. The work was carried out by my local dealer under warranty, where the service has been first class.

I found the service received from the supplying dealer to be, if I am kind, no more than 3/10.
