I have had a 407 SW 2.0 HDi for 18 months as a company car. It has had two engine management systems. The air-con has failed 3 times and will blow either very hot or cold and won't turn off. Both front wheel bearings failed within 20,000 miles.
The brakes squeaked when braking, they fixed them and now they squeak when not braking. The power steering squeals if you try and turn the wheel more than a 1/4 turn. The engine randomly cuts out when driving but they can't find a fault.
Fuel economy is pretty poor at 36-38mpg on a long run.
I do a lot of motorway miles and it's actually a nice drive but I wouldn't buy one. As soon as I hit 80,000 miles I get to replace it with something else but it may take a while as I am doing more miles in courtesy cars at the moment.
I bought a top spec model, leather and all the toys two years ago and on the whole I am very satisfied. It is a big comfortable car and you can drive for 8 hours and get out still able to move. The engine is fantastic, loads of power and almost noiseless. It will cruise all day at 100. Overtaking is a doddle. One problem is that the engine is so quiet that you will find yourself doing 120 on the motorway and get banned. Handling is OK but it is better on decent roads. It is a bit unsettled on twisty roads and you have to work at it. Better if you put it on sport suspension. A few quibbles: the cruise control won't apply the brakes so it isn't too reliable as a speed limiter; electric seats don't have a memory button ; fuel consumption is high , about 29-31 mpg on average runs. 34-35 at best; not a massive amount of space in the back; visability not great for reversing but proximity sensor is a boon.
Car is 2 years old and has covered 20k miles. When it's running OK it's comfortable, performs well and is reasonably economical for its size. However it has been a disaster in terms of reliability and build quality. Here are the high (low) lights: -headlamp adjustment -washer bottle leaked -intermittent misfire for over a year. Accelerator replaced and other adjustments made no difference. Eventually EGR valve replaced and now seems OK - at last. -power steering fault recall -beige top of dash reflected so badly it was a hazard - eventually Peugeot agreed to replace; -external door trim came loose; -service indicator needed resetting twice; - tyre pressure sensors give false alarms; - sat nav will not accept post codes; - drivers door opening mechanism broke. Dealership - cannot fault them. Helpful and sympathetic. Just feel sorry for them having to sell and maintain such a rubbish product. Most definitely the last Peugeot I shall have.
I have had my 407 for about 3 weeks and am generally very happy with it (I had a Vauxhall Zafira petrol auto previously).
Good fuel consumtion. Good space inside cabin. Comfortable.
Two main gripes: I do find at junctions that there is a slight delay between pushing the accelerator and actually moving ! And the middle storage armrest between driver/passenger keeps pinging up whilst driving - very annoying !
