I bought this '98 car about a year ago from a back street garage with only 48,000 on the clock. It looks good especially in red but apart from that I wouldn't recommend this particular model especially if you've been use to elec windows and central locking like I was. Why they decided to put in an electric sunroof and no other electrics is beyond me.
I have to force it into 2nd gear (apparantly meganes are notorious for this) and everyday there seems to be a new rattle in the cabin. Apart from all that it does drive quite well and I haven't had to spend any money on it apart from 2 tyres.
I have had numerous problems with the gearbox and it seems to be getting no better, even though I have paid over two times what the car is worth just on these repairs.
The car also seems to be like a random sound generator, with new noises being found every day.
I bought this car on a budget and the only budget this car seems to have is a huge one with the nice people at Mastercard.
I own a 1996 1.6 RXE. It is fantastic, and fuel economy is suberb. It has great pulling power compared to a 1999 T-registered Astra I used to own. It is fantastic on motorways and has ample luggage space.
I drove a 1997 1.4 RN the other day and I was quite impressed with the driving position but that's the only good thing about it.
The gearbox was very clunky and I had to physically force it into 2nd as it was so stiff.
The brakes were in quite a poor condition as I later found out that their was a leak in the brake pipe.
I suppose for an older car it is expected, but for any buyers wanting to buy an older Megane I recommened checking it over with someone with a good knowledge of cars or pay for an independent inspection.
