    My car

We have had this car for two years - purchased (cheaply) from a Renault dealer with 25k on the clock, now at 90K. Comfort level superb, depreciation (as second owner) very low, overall running costs excellent. Front tyres are lasting just under 40k (we can buy them for £130 fitted, rear tyres last a bit longer. Brake pads changed once at 72k, still on original discs. Bought extended warranty but not yet needed it - other than when I locked myself out and had to get the AA out! Has had a replacement exhaust/cat (fell off at 30k!) and water pump (fell off at 40k!) plus a couple of minor electrical faults, all dealt with under original warranty.

Plus points: - best seats of any luxury car, loads of space - depreciation will be no more than £5.5k in 75,000 miles and 27 months - far less than any of the conventional alternatives - superb speed limiter, much more use than cruise control (also fitted) - quiet, refined, great ride and surprisingly good handling - economical for such a big car 35-38 mpg in mixed use

Minus points: - silly electrical faults, such as washer fluid sensor not reading correctly - some think it's ugly!

It may have quirky looks but a great car, and mine has been very reliable. Will replace when the extended warranty runs out, though, just in case!

    My car

I have been driving the Vel Satis 2.2Dci for two years now, chosen as a company vehicle.

The good bits - spacious (boot and cabin), airy and comfortable inside with a classy feel. It's quiet, and fast enough, well equipped and great on long journeys. Handling is fine, it does lean a fair amount in corners and transmit some bumps into the cabin and on poor surfaces.

The bad bits - reliability has been awful. Front disc and pads twice, exhaust replaced, the gearbox replaced, rear disc and pads replaced and a new master clutch cylinder (this resulted in three breakdowns which needed recovery when the dealer didn't do the job properly).

All of this was covered without quibble by the 3 year warranty and Renault assist worked well, but 4 breakdowns and 20 days off the road in 2 years is unacceptable in a flagship model.

In terms of costs, economy runs at about 40mpg on the open road, but push it or in town and you are into mid/low 30s, and 18K servicing intervals are good. But checkout the tyres - 225/55V17 is a very unusual size and are only made by two manufacturers - prices are abou £175 a corner and they don't last above 15k miles.

In summary, this car addreses all the needs I have of a car, and looking through the options I can't see a lot better for the money - if only I could rely upon it to work! Good secondhand choice but make sure you have the extended warranty and breakdown cover!!!

    My car

I have owned this car for 10 months and have had all sorts of trouble with it from a tyre pressure sensor fault and automatic handbrake fault.

The car was off the road for 13 days because the garage could not get it to start.

In all, the car has been in the garage for about 25 to 30 days so far and it is a 52 plate with only 9000 miles on the clock.
