FORGET THE ROVER STIGMA! I have owned this 25 Gti for over two years now and completed over 30000miles. Yes the head gasket has gone, although get it done at the right place and it won't cost you that much (£700 incl cambelt change, water pump and thermostat!) Apart from that one problem I have had no reliability issues at all. Cabin is shocking - harks back to the early hondas. However the best thing about this car is driving it - Its soooo much fun! seriously rapid - around 8secs 0-60 (thats as quick as a Focus ST170!) and handles particularly well when cornering hard. All in all I would definately recommend although only certain types of drivers will like! Cheaper alternative to the MG's.
Owned one of these cars for 2 years, would recomend you go for 1.6 il or better with air con and abs and avoid the base models, the 2000 1.4 83bhp 25 i owned lacked power even for a small car. compared to other small cars 5 or 6 years ago its ok. The car i owned was new its only faults were the rear spoiler brake light stopped working, and the gearbox was poor, reverse gear was hard to find.
I bought this car from a friend 4 years ago and had only done 9,000 miles. Now on 43,000 and has become a nightmare with head gasket replacement and water pump plus all extras inc vat £892 bill!! Coming home tonight fuel was spirting out over engine after O ring split 2 days after repairs. Worst and most unreliable car I've owned. One word,Avoid!!!
My mate owns this car and iv'e had a couple of goes in it and its the most eaistest car iv'e drove to stall! I had to keep reving it and I looked forward to braking but not alot seemed to happen! Trying to get the gear I wanted was hard enough as well! I'll stick to my Corsa thanks, long story short> TYPICALL ROVER!
