I bought this car new in 2004. I upgraded it to 103PS from 86PS when new. It has covered over 28,000 miles and has never put a foot wrong.
The biggest fault I have with it is that that it only does about 30mpg, but that's perhaps because it likes being driven! Shame they went bung, otherwise I would have got another.

The person we bought the car from didn't say it wasn't a turbodiesel but after some research on whatcar.com and Wikipedia we found out that it was. My Dad denied this until a few days ago where we felt the turbo kick in at 4000 rpm only 500rpm befoe you plunge into the red line. But In short its perky,easy in town but its a bit nosiey and bumpy but can be forgiven be cause it's 10 years old and it's a Rover! Diesel in cars like this are very cheap to run and this no exeption. The car will crack at least 40mpg. And sadly, since MG Rover went down the tubes and start back up again in spring 07, prices are now currently Tuppence.T he reason we got the car was a runaround while we waited for an insurance settlement on a total loss Jaguar S-type. The car we own is a 1996 (N) 220 SDi bought for £580.
The steering wheel feels nicer than our MOMO steering wheel in our 05' Evolution VIII. The Cabin is a lake of black plastic but you can live with it. All the Rovers I have been in have needed the radio code but it's easy to enter. This has excellent equipment for its type, including remote cental locking, radio/tape, airbag SRS (driver), front electric windows and sunroof and even more.
I've owned dozens of cars of all shapes and sizes. One thing I've learned about reviews is that they need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Cars people say are great prove to be junk and cars rubbished in the press prove to be winners. I've recently owned a Yaris..expensive and dull, a polo, badly built and expensive to live with, and an MX5...great, but big bills and the doors fall off..not my idea, the dealer told me that after mine did! I bought a Rover GLi with tons of added extras for £7999 on the road. What value! The car is smooth to drive, as well built as any I've mentioned, and easy to live with. When you compare it to anything else in that price range it's hyper-value. Don't let the naysayers put you off. These are great little cars. In Britain we like to slag ourselves off. This is an example. You still see dozens of lovely 'N' reg 200s about. Will the Yaris or 107 last as well? Er..I think not.
Well, 13 months down the line since I last submitted a review. I did suffer the CHF at 89,000 miles but due to regular fluid checks, I caught the problem and (aside normal costs of tyres, brakes, exhausts) this has been the only money I've ever had to fork out (£423 incl. VAT).
In garage for 3 days (they have to take the whole engine apart and skim the head), got it back and the engine is as good as new!!
Still returning 45mpg, still drives beautifully, still starts first time regardless of weather and still plenty of power from the 103ps unit, now got 96,500 on the clock and looking to buy a bigger car (family expanding). I'd love to see the 100K on the clock and I'll be really sorry to see this car go, it has been an absolute pleasure to drive.
