We bought this 1996 model in 2003 with 74,000 mls on the clock. It has now done 125,000 miles and has not missed a beat. It is about to have the cam belt changed which aside from the usual servicing will be the first maintenance we have given it. The body and interior are still in excellent condition and we will probably keep it past 150,000 mls. The permanent 4WD is great for gravel roads and we use on snow getting to a ski resort in winter and on sandy beaches in summer. We are about to get another Impreza for our daughter. Subarus may cost more than some cars but we are sold on them and have also had two Legacys.
I love this car, we have other subaru vehicles and this is much more driveable than the WRX STI which is a beast. This is good for the lady driver as you can have speed and great handling, but still get the dog, children, bikes etc in. Expensive on fuel, but worth it. 4 wheel drive very useful out here in very rural Herefordshire
The car was bought with 40,000 it was three years old. The only problem you will have with this car is deciding what to replace it with, which is where we are now. It has 85,000 on the clock and apart from routine servicing and a cambelt change, the only thing that has gone wrong was the front disk pad was sticking and warped the disc, although if I had taken it to the garage when the judder started it would probably have not needed replacement! Performance is good, but because the drive is permanent 4 wheel drive, economy suffers with consumption at around 25 around town with 30 on a long run. Intrior trim could be better it is not that anything has fallen off, it just seems that the car deserves better. The seats on this model do not have height adjust and only rake in increments which makes finding a comfortable position difficult for some drivers. I don't know if later models are better. So what do you replace it with, when I look at a suitable automatic estate, there does not seem to be anything out there that does not seem to have problems. Yes fuel consumption is not great, but a new Focus's are not much better and come with lots of problems, Renault, Vauxhall all seem to be inferior to the Imprezza, maybe I will keep it another ten years until the competition catches up!
