I purchased a 1.9 130BHP Desiel Highline Model, having previously owned a Mercedes C and CLK.
The purchase was, for ecomonic reasons, due to the mileage I now travel. The Highline model has everything you could ask for in a luxury car, yet alone a standard family car with leather, heated seats, multidisc CD etc - all of which add thousands to a Merc or BMW spec.
The engine is slightly noisy when pushed but as good if not better than the Merc. Despite being replaced later this year, an excellent all-round buy with good discounts (better than the target price!). This linked to 30,000 miles beween services, a sure winner with me anyway!
A very powerful reliable underated spacious saloon. People secretly love this car but know very little about this particular VW. It's very popular in the states.
I definitely recommend this particular VW to lovers of quality-built saloons.
I have just purchased a two-year-old Passat TDI Sport 130, having previously owned a 115 Sport before.
I read with some interest the various points in the summary. The statement about the diesels being thundery, I find a little confusing, as the one that I own is anything but, and is very quiet on the road and at idle in traffic.
The previous Passat was a little noisier, but then it had done 161,000 miles when I sold it, and it still felt very solid!
It is also fairly good at going round corners, as was the old one. I did try an SE and did not find the handling as good, as it felt a bit softer.
My one concern is that the gear change feels a little harder than the old Passat, but that may be because the it has only done a mere 60,000 miles and needs another 100,000 or so to loosen up.
The overall quality is superb. A lot of my colleagues are forced to drive Vectras as company cars, and I feel sorry for them as they are forever breaking down, or there are bits falling off them after not many miles.
As the car I have is a 6 speed box, 50 mpg plus is within easy reach, as it was on the previous car (which averaged 55mpg over the time I owned it), although as this one is more powerful I am looking at maybe 52 mpg (Note that I do a lot of motorway miles rather than grinding through towns).
Overall, the Passat Sport is a great car, and really I can find no faults with it at all.
I just love this car. It's by far and away the best car I have ever had the pleasure to drive.
Fantastic value for money, excellent build quality and performance that permanently leaves a smile on your face. This must be the most underrated family car on the market. Buy it!!

Owned for 1 year, as family runabout Pros good size, general build quality, powershift gearbox, good to drive, low costs Cons handling slighly…
Had this car for 90k from new. A 56 plate. In over 2,000,000 miles driven this one has broken down the most of any car I have had. DO NOT get a 2.0…
