Hired this car on holiday for 2 weeks. Best hire car I have ever driven because its so easy to drive. Having hired focus's and fiat grande puntos in Europe before i always found learning to drive a new left hand drive car challenging. The polo just felt immediately right. Like everything was in the perfect place. I was driving like I was in the UK in my own car in minutes. I've owned a polo before, a 1995 model that was car of the year and this is a quantum leap forward. Feels like a slightly smaller golf. Interior is very high quality and all the controls have a well engineered feel. Putting the car into reverse was no problem and the clutch was perfectly weighted. Very easy to drive. Praise also for the ride quality. Owning an alfa mito at the moment it certainly puts how firm the ride of this is in context. The polo soaked up bumps like a bigger car. The engine was also refined. I would not go below 1.4 in terms of engine unless its a TSI, avoid 3 cylinder 1.2, as this car (the 1.4 85BHP)felt quite underpowered. Often had to change down a gear to get up hills. If most driving is in town, perfectly adequate overtaking might require lots of planning. Now for main complaints. It isn't much fun in the bends. The steering whilst light and effortless is too light. No feel at all. Doesn't seem to want to corner enthusiastically it just rolls and understeers. Now back in mito and fun factor is back. But at the end of a long tough week I'd rather have the comfy ride of the polo.
Our Polo was bought to replace our 2-year old VW Fox and from the start we knew we where on to a winner! It’s comfy, cheap to run and has the build quality of more expensive cars. Everything inside the car looks, and sounds, like a Volkswagen but nevertheless it’s a really nice place to be. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy but the front seats don’t slide when you fold them forward makes getting into the rear seats with dignity a challenge. We couldn’t believe the deal which we got on the Polo. It wasn’t like they were trying to get rid of a problem car stuck in the garage: we were able to tailor our Polo by choosing the colour, options and the financing. Our family has been buying from Volkswagen for years but we were still surprised by the quality of service given. The only downside to the Polo is the smallish engine: a bit more “off the line grunt” would have been nice. However, this slight niggle doesn’t stop us enjoying the superb handling and refinement of the car.
