Having read many reports from motoring journalists, i am totally unable to accept their criticisms of this car. This is the 38th car i have owned in the last 27 years, and can hand on heart say this is at or very near the top of the pile !! I also noticed that the people who complain about the S40 have either owned the Phase 1 version, or more likely a T4 variant. I have owned my 52 plate 1.9D Sport (115bhp) car for the last 2 1/2 years and taken the mileage from 46500, to its present 92500. This car has NEVER missed a beat ALWAYS returned at least 46mpg no matter what the roads, cheap road tax, and cheap to service through independant Volvo specialist (VolvoTech of Romsey). Had the ECU re-mapped from ChipTuning when I first bought the car, and now produces 150bhp at the fly (130bhp at the wheels) SUPERB car !!!
I own a 2000 W-Reg S40 1.8 XS, purchased in December 2006, and I was fully aware I would need to do 20-25,000 miles a year.
Fuel economy on the daily commute is 42mpg and recently, on a 1000-mile round-trip, it reached 49.8mpg.
Most importantly for me, due to back problems, is the ride and interior comfort - and these are both superb. My 1000-mile trip was done in complete comfort and with no aches or pains, the miles just drifting by.
Am I happy with it? Oh, yeah. Would I recommend it? Yup. Do I think the two-star What Car? rating is wrong? Definitely!
Driving approx 17,500miles/year, I was looking for a car that would ease some of the strain, and not cost the earth. I had seen an S40 1.8XS 2001 Year Model for sale, and was quiet interested in it. Before purchasing the car some 2.5yrs ago, I read quiet a few reviews about the S40. Liking the looks of the car I did not let this deter me from going and test driving it. As I drove the car I was trying to recall the comments made, and it was not long before I started to think that I must have been reading about a different car. By the end of the drive I had decided that the people doing the reviews, were to the S40, what Jeremy Clarkson is to the Vauxhall Vectra. Having had the car for around 2.5yrs, I can't now think of a car that will give me the satisfaction that this car gives me, for a modest outlay, so it looks like being another, at least another Volvo.
