I have had this car for just under a year and am very happy with it.
The car looks great, drives well and the build quality is excellent. I have also just had my first service, which came in at £252 (a little higher than I would have liked).
I will certainly be looking at other Volvo models first when choosing my next car.
I have a MY2007 and I have been excited.First of all,I admire the way it looks both inside(the center console is marvelous) and outside. It is an excellent cruiser on the motorway and its handling is very good in the city as well.No external noise comes through the cabin. My only complaint is on the suspension which is noisy but the roads here in Greece have deteriorated in the last decade especially in the new suburbs where infrastrucure projects are underway. Here in Greece diesel versions are prohibited so as for the running costs it is very fuel efficient when compared to other petrol cars...My last car was an Audi A4 1.6 which was really thirsty.Volvo S40 1.8 has by far better fuel consumption although it delivers 24hps more and substantially more torque...The quality of materials used is very good and the build quality is far better, almost excellent. Finally the equipment is very good for the price of the car which is significantly lower than that of a really equivalent car, such as BMW 3.A drawback of this car is the boot space which is small as a result of the design(rear shoulders)but adequate for a small trip(I would buy the V50 if I wanted more boot space and practicality)and those in the rear may complain for the space for their heads.Rear visibility is not excellent, too. But Volvo S40 is almost a coupe and looks very sporty rather than the dull new BMW 3-series.If you have small kids it's the ideal saloon car...
Excellent car, good quality, safe ... having read all these reader reviews I decided to purchase one... it has a reassuring Clunk when the doors shut. Style is fantastic, cost a lot less than rivals but still delivers quality and style, the following points raised by readers I cannot defend.... Service is £250 not £782 utter rubbish!whoever charged that would need head looking at to pay it. The reason the key is placed on the dash is to stop it going into your leg in an accident!, The reason the windows go up when you close doors is in the Manual!,the reason the doors lock by them selves is because thats a safety feature that can be turned off. Glove box is very small, excellent leather quality (same as Saab),small boot but what do you expect. CD changer slow (compared to Astra) And I dontwork forVolvo !
I have had my S40 for six months as my new company car. I cannot wait for it to be changed - there's no room in the boot, and I hate those stupid warning lights, gongs, and bells.
The doors lock and unlock themselves, it stalls and stops on its own, and the washer bottle has more capacity then the fuel tank
The position of the ignition is awful - was the designer on drugs? It has just had its 36,000 mile service, which cost £782.89. At least Dick Turpin wore a mask so you knew you were being robbed! With servicing every 10,000 miles, it's going to be expensive to run.
The radio sounds like someone switching the sound on and off. All in all, for £19,000 I would have had a Mazda 6 and still have had £3500 left over.

My late 2010 1.6 CRDI has covered 43,000 miles in just over 18 months. The good. So far the car seems totally reliable. The interior still looks…
I just traded in my beloved 56 plate ST2 and I regret it. All I can say is buy one, the car is fantastic with the best thing being the noise the…
