I bought the new 2008 V70 2.4 D5 SE LUX Geartronic to replace my well loved three-year old 2004 2.4 D5 SE without having the opportunity to drive the car before it was delivered to me this week.
The new car has exceeded my expectations. As ever with Volvo, it is supremely comfortable and the quality of the ride is significantly better than it was on the old model. The cabin is very well finished and the turning circle, thanks to the car being a little wider, is much improved. Noise suppression from the D5 engine is also much better than on the old car and the geartronic changes smoothly.
The optional sat-nav now offers a full postcode facility and I have already found the active cruise control to be much more than a gimmick. It really does work! Be warned that the in-car bluetooth phone system does not work with Blackberrys or many other smart phones.
Overall, I feel that the V70 is a much easier car to live with than its German rivals for the high mileage driver. It puts comfort/safety at the very top of the list. It may not be quite such a sharp drive but I would rather be free of aches and pains after six hours behind the wheel. Furthermore, if you opt for the Dynaudio premium sound system you can enjoy some of the best sound quality on wheels whilst you eat up the miles.
