Against As with all Eos models, the price is on the high side. Lowering the hood restricts boot space, while with the roof raised, there is some wind noise to contend with at speed.
Of the two 1.4 petrol-engined models, this feels the most sporting. It’s pricey, but resale values are strong, and the decent mpg, low insurance and low CO2 emissions make it cheap to run.
Folding steel-roofed cabriolets are no longer a new idea and Volkswagen wasn’t one of the first to introduce it, but the Golf-based VW Eos is certainly one of the best, featuring an electric sunroof built into its retractable roof.
Rival cars from Peugeot and Renault can’t match the Eos’ image or all-round abilities and the Eos is better to drive than the closely related Audi A3 Cabriolet.
While VW has got it right, it doesn’t sell its wares cheap. Top-spec versions stray over the £30,000 barrier, which is a lot for what is, in essence, a Golf with a fancy roof.
Stick with the cheaper versions – which are anything but short of kit or power – and you can’t really go wrong. Whichever version you choose, residual values will be impressively high; a reflection of the Eos’ class and appeal.
