For The VW Up 1.0 60 Take Up is a stylish, agile and fun with enough power for urban driving. Rides very smoothly and has a very desirable image.

Against The 59bhp engine lacks pace when you need it on high-speed roads. It’s pretty basic inside too, with no air-con and manual windows. It also lacks a rev counter.

The VW Up 1.0 60 Take Up is a capable city-hopper with chic looks to match. It's pretty sparse on kit, though, and we think most people would prefer the more powerful 74bhp engine.

Buyer's notes

Target Price team says:

We’ve driven both versions of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The higher-powered 74bhp car copes well at motorway speeds, but it needs plenty of revs to get going. The 59bhp version is slower, and while it’s capable on urban roads, it can struggle a bit on the motorway. The optional ASG transmission makes life more difficult, as it causes the car to lunge in between shifts.

There are three trim levels to choose from, and all come with four airbags and ABS as standard. It also has an automatic emergency braking system, and although it doesn’t come as standard, it can be fitted to any version as an option – it’s reasonably priced, too.

The VW Up is pretty basically kitted out. Air-conditioning and electric front windows only start mid-range, and if you want the terrifically handy portable sat-nav infotainment unit, you’ll either have to add it as an option or buy the top of the range car.
