<p>There are several criteria by which you can judge a new car, but for a sports car none is as important as fun.</p>

<p>A great sports car should be able to put a smile on your face whether you’re gliding along a smooth, scenic B-road or tackling potholes and speed bumps on a drizzly Monday morning commute. That means ride comfort, interior quality and generous equipment levels are often just as important as deft handling, a powerful engine and a fast 0-62mph sprint time.</p>

<p>Here are the 10 best sports cars you can buy – plus one you should steer clear of.</p>

Best sports cars 2024

Sports

<p dir="ltr">Mercedes’ line-up is vast – ranging from the A-Class family hatchback through to staple saloons such as the C-Class and E-Class, and onwards towards multiple SUVs, luxury saloons and even sports cars. Coupés and convertibles are thrown into the mix as well.</p>

<p dir="ltr">As one of the ‘big three’ German brands, Mercedes most often finds itself competing with Audi and BMW but more recently has found itself fending off Jaguar and Volvo, too.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Mercedes models are known for comfort. One example of this is the E-Class, because while the Audi A6 has a plusher interior and the BMW 5 Series handles better, the E-Class is probably the most comfortable for a long motorway journey.</p>


MERCEDES-BENZ

SL CLASS

<p dir="ltr">The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/sl-class/sports/review/n17206">Mercedes-AMG SL</a>&nbsp;has long been a great compromise between sporty roadster and long-distance cruiser, but the latest places more emphasis on driving pleasure. That’s not to say it’s uncomfortable – far from it – but it delivers more when you show it a series of bends.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Even the entry-level models provide plenty of performance, but we think it’s worth digging a little deeper for the SL 55 4Matic+ Premium Plus version for something that’s truly special.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The SL’s interior is very well laid out, although we’d hoped that the quality would be a little better. It’s a fairly practical roadster, although like the Porsche 911, the rear seats are really only suitable for children or luggage.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Yes, Aston Martin is the preferred manufacturer of a certain (not so) secret agent, but its latest cars offer a lot more than the chance to indulge your Bond fantasies.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The DB12 is a very fast and very luxurious long distance cruiser, and the DBS is arguably one of the most glamorous cars around.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Proving it's not afraid to move with the times, Aston has also embraced&nbsp;the march of the SUV; its DBX707 is a stunning example of what's possible when building a fast, expensive and sporty SUV.</p>


ASTON MARTIN

<p>The DBS is based on the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/aston-martin/db11/coupe/review/n17217">Aston Martin DB11</a>&nbsp;but has been heavily tweaked to make it lighter, faster and more exciting, as well as less skittish and easier to live with.</p>

<p>Thanks to its accurate steering and excellent balance, you feel as though you’re in complete control of the staggering 715bhp produced by the 5.2-litre petrol engine. And that makes it an absolute joy to drive.</p>

<p>The interior is less than perfect, though. Some of the trim feels a bit flimsy, and the infotainment system can be laggy, but the DBS does at least score well for comfort. The car manages to combine great handling prowess with suspension that delivers a smooth ride over imperfect roads.</p>

9: Aston Martin DBS

<p dir="ltr">Mazda can be summed up in a single word: bold. Not only do its cars generally look like nothing else on the market, but it’s also invested heavily in innovative engine technology.</p>

<p dir="ltr">So, while many car makers have moved to smaller turbocharged engines, Mazda instead offers larger motors that are still efficient. For example, the entry-level petrol option in the Mazda 3 is a 2.0-litre unit –&nbsp;far larger than what you’ll find in most rivals – but it remains very clean.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Highlights of Mazda’s line-up include the MX-5 sports car, which has won our Convertible of the Year Award multiple times, and the CX-5 large SUV, which was named as our inaugural best car for dog owners.</p>


MAZDA

MX-5

<p>If you’re looking for the most fun for the least money, the MX-5 is an excellent choice. Even a top-spec model will cost you much less than any other car on this list.</p>

<p>Although the MX-5 is&nbsp;the slowest model in this list and would struggle to shake off many&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/best/hot-hatches/n17005">hot hatches</a>, it&nbsp;makes up for that by being so easy to drive and have fun in. (It's also available with a retractable hardtop&nbsp;roof, as the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mazda/mx-5/coupe/review/n17366">Mazda MX-5 RF</a>.)</p>

<p>We rate the 1.5-litre model in Prime-Line trim highly, but whichever engine you choose, the car is&nbsp;free-revving, light and precise, and even the stiffer suspension fitted to 2.0-litre versions provides a sufficiently comfortable ride. This is not a big car, and&nbsp;for many buyers that's part of the appeal, but that does mean taller people might struggle to fit.</p>

8: Mazda MX-5

<p dir="ltr">Do you look at the models of Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz and find them all a bit too… common? Well then, Maserati might be up your street.</p>

<p dir="ltr">This Italian car maker has one SUV in its line-up – the Porsche Cayenne-rivalling Levante – but also the Ghibli and Quattroporte saloons, GranTurismo coupé and GranCabrio drop-top.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Despite its long history, Maserati has been through several periods of inactivity but is now in better health thanks to being part of the large Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group.</p>

<p dir="ltr">In the future, we’re expecting to see Maserati grow its SUV range with new models to sit above and below the Levante, as well as a new range-topping sports car.</p>


MASERATI

MC20

<p dir="ltr">While an increasing number of supercars rely on hybrid technology for their performance, the Maserati MC20 is far more traditional in its approach. The 3.0-litre V6 doesn't sound amazing, but its performance is savage. The way it handles is perfectly suited to the UK’s roads, with accurate steering and adaptive suspension that deals with broken surfaces beautifully.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The interior is less showy than the Ferrari 296 and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mclaren/artura/coupe/review/n26091">McLaren Artura</a>, but its simplicity is refreshing. It’s easy to get a&nbsp;good driving position and visibility, forward at least, is very good. It’s a strict two-seater, but there’s a reasonable boot which coupled with the great ride quality, makes it a surprisingly useful long-distance tourer.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Lamborghinis have been adorning bedroom posters since the mid-1960s. Not bad for a company whose origins lie in making tractors.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Today, Lamborghini is part of the Volkswagen Group, and as well as bolstering its core sports car portfolio, it has branched out to launch the Urus – a luxurious SUV that’s a rival to the similarly rapid Bentley Bentayga W12 and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.</p>


LAMBORGHINI

HURACAN

<p>For anyone who wants their sports car to draw plenty of attention, the&nbsp;Huracán would be a very good choice. The original Huracán’s sense of occasion alone was enough to convince many people to buy it, despite some rivals being better to drive.</p>

<p>Over the years,&nbsp;Lamborghini has incrementally improved the handling of the Huracán so that it drives as well as its looks would have you believe. The 5.2-litre V10 engine has also been improved, and now produces up to 631bhp.</p>

<p>The model is available with a rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive set-up. We&nbsp;reckon the rear-wheel drive version offers the better driving experience of the two, despite having a slightly lower 602bhp power output.</p>

6: Lamborghini Huracán

<p dir="ltr">Porsche is best known as the quintessential sports car maker, but its line-up is increasingly diverse, interesting and successful, from its SUV family to the Panamera hatchback and shooting brake and, in time, a planned family of electric vehicles.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Whatever your choice, What Car?’s testers rate the cars highly; Porsche has an unusually high percentage of five and four-star cars.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Without exception, its sports cars are class leaders or among the class leaders, standing out for combining driving thrills with surprising luxury and comfort. Likewise, its SUVs are among the sharpest handling, as well as offering high levels of practicality and quality. Meanwhile, the Panamera is a true rival to the very best large executive saloons.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Porsche also sees itself as an electric car pioneer and has already enjoyed sales success with its plug-in hybrid range. Its first all-electric sports car is imminent, signalling the firm’s intent to stay relevant for many years to come.</p>


PORSCHE

<p>The latest iteration of the 911 upholds the reputation of its predecessors with its fantastic range of engines, excellent handling and impressive interior.</p>

<p>The entry-level Carrera comes with a&nbsp;380bhp 3.0-litre engine offers plenty of performance, and we think it represents the best value for money. But if you want even more power, there are many other versions to choose from – the most powerful of which is the 641bhp Turbo S. All models come with adaptive suspension, allowing you to fine-tune the car’s handling to suit the road you’re driving on.</p>

<p>Optional extras don’t come cheap, but we’d recommend adding a reversing camera, power-folding door mirrors, keyless entry and adjustable sports seats to help you get comfortable behind the wheel.</p>

<p dir="ltr">One of the world’s most famous brands and an integral part of the Formula 1 grid since the first championship in 1950, Ferrari fully lives up to its exalted reputation, producing some of the best sports cars money can buy.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Its entry-level model (although that term hardly seems appropriate) is the Portofino convertible, which is powered by a twin-turbo V8 and capable of blasting from 0-62mph in 3.5sec.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Then further up the range you find the mid-engined 488s, in coupé and Spider forms, and two GT cars: the GTC4 Lusso and the appropriately named 812 Superfast, a V12 monster that can hit 211mph.</p>


FERRARI

296 GTB

<p>The Ferrari 296 GTB is a landmark car, because it marked the moment Ferrari used its F1 hybrid knowhow in a mainstream supercar. The elephant in the room is the term ‘mainstream’, because all that cutting-edge tech comes with a hefty price tag which prevents it climbing higher in our list.</p>

<p>If your pockets are deep enough, though, it is a remarkable feat of engineering. Unlike the old-school-feeling&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/lamborghini/huracan/coupe/review/n17163">Lamborghini Huracán</a>, it can travel 15 miles on electricity alone, meaning you can leave your house without waking the neighbours. Press the accelerator hard, and the V6 engine and motors combine for a 2.9sec 0-62mph and a top speed of 205mph.</p>

<p>That it’s superb fun to drive is a given, but what is truly remarkable is just how easy it is to drive – and to exploit that performance.</p>

4: Ferrari 296 GTB

<p dir="ltr">Alpine (pronounced 'Al-peen') only makes one model, but if you’re in the market for a sports car, this French brand is worthy of your attention.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Its A110 is one of the best-handling cars on sale today. And while it’s not especially powerful, it’s still properly quick, thanks to its low weight.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The looks and character of today’s A110 were inspired by a legendary namesake that won the first ever World Rally Championship back in 1973. But the new car is undoubtedly a worthy successor.</p>


ALPINE

A110

<p>Small, light and nimble cars often make the best sports cars, and the A110 is a great example of that general rule. It weighs only about 1100kg, which is roughly the same as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/ford/fiesta/hatchback/review/n106">Ford Fiesta</a>. That&nbsp;means the A110’s 249bhp 1.8-litre turbocharged engine propels it with ease, and 0-62mph takes just 4.5 seconds. Faster models are available, but we think the entry-level version is still the best.</p>

<p>The model's&nbsp;low weight also brings handling benefits. The A110 feels well-balanced and athletic, and very accurate steering makes it easy to turn with precision.</p>

<p>The A110 costs more than the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/tt/coupe/review/n12">Audi TT</a>&nbsp;coupé and about the same as a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/cayman/coupe/review/n17361">Porsche 718 Cayman</a>&nbsp;but resale values are&nbsp;stronger even than the Porsche’s.</p>

BOXSTER

<p>The 718 Boxster is a sensational sports car, and the GTS version is the best of a great bunch. Indeed, the Boxster GTS comes with a 4.0-litre flat-six engine which sounds incredible, and produces a heady 395bhp.</p>

<p>If your budget won’t stretch to the GTS, you’ll be pleased to know that the standard 2.0-litre Boxster is still one of the most enjoyable sports cars around.</p>

<p>No matter which version you go for, you’ll be treated not only to endless handling excitement, but also a remarkably well-controlled ride, beautiful build quality and a highly customisable interior.</p>

CAYMAN

<p>Even in entry-level 2.0-litre form, the Porsche 718 Cayman is an impressive sports car, but it’s the glorious 4.0-litre flat six fitted to the GTS model which propels the Cayman to the top spot on our list.</p>

<p>That engine delivers thunderous performance and a terrific soundtrack, and is at its best when paired with the standard six-speed manual gearbox; the extra driver involvement the manual offers gives it the edge over the optional PDK automatic gearbox.</p>

<p>Of course, you can also get the 718 as a convertible – the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/boxster/sports/review/n27">Porsche 718 Boxster</a>. That car comes a close second, but the Cayman is even better to drive than its soft-top sibling, not to mention cheaper to buy.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Munich-based BMW is most famous for its sports saloons, in particular the 3 Series and 5 Series. However, it actually builds almost every type of car imaginable: everything from two-seat convertibles to seven-seat MPVs.</p>

<p dir="ltr">The cheapest model in the BMW range is the 1 Series hatchback, which is a rival to the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volkswagen Golf. Meanwhile, at the other extreme is the M8&nbsp;grand tourer, which costs more than £120,000.</p>

<p dir="ltr">BMW was also quick to capitalise on the rise of the SUV and now has ten in its range: the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7 and XM, plus the electric iX3 and iX.</p>

<p dir="ltr">All of this makes it one of the big three German prestige brands, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz.</p>


<p>Above all else, a sports car has to be fun. Unfortunately, the Z4 isn’t nearly as fun as any of our favourite sports cars.</p>
