Hatchback-like handling isn’t enough for the Alfa Romeo to stand out over its more accomplished family SUV rivals, especially when it’s priced to compete with premium rivals that all have plusher interiors.

The mild-hybrid engine is fine for the most part, but can be a little buzzy when thrashed and isn’t particularly sprightly. There are family SUV hybrids that have stronger electric motors and bigger batteries to keep them in EV mode for longer, whereas the Tonale has to rely heavily on its engine if you want decent acceleration.
