The A3 isn't as well finished inside or as polished overall as the previous model, but it's still comfortable, enjoyable to drive, has space for the family and a range of punchy petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. We recommend the 40 TFSIe for its electric range, low company car tax and performance. It’s one of the best plug-ins out there and a fine car in its own right.

Sport has the same infotainment system, LED headlights and rear parking sensors as the Technik trim, but adds 17in alloy wheels, leather seats, dual-zone climate control and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats.

This plug-in hybrid combines a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack. The official all-electric range is impressive – 40 miles if you stick to 17in wheels, which are a no-cost option on S line trim. In the real world it'll be less than that, though. Still, in combination with CO2 emissions of just 25g/km it's in a very low company car tax bracket. Performance is strong, too, with 0-62mph coming in 7.6sec, making it our pick of the range.
