Review

There's no doubt the latest A3 isn't as well finished inside or as polished overall as the previous model, but it still rates well against the premium competition of the day, which includes the BMW 1 Series and Mercedes A-Class. The A3's comfortable, enjoyable to drive, has space for the family and a range of punchy petrol, diesel and hybrid engines. We recommend the 40 TFSIe for its electric range, low company car tax and performance. It’s one of the best plug-ins out there and a fine car in its own right.

Sport has the same infotainment system, LED headlights and rear parking sensors as the Technik trim, but adds 17in alloy wheels, leather seats, dual-zone climate control and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats.

This plug-in hybrid combines a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack. The official all-electric range is impressive – 40 miles if you stick to 17in wheels, which are a no-cost option on S line trim. In the real world it'll be less than that, though. Still, in combination with CO2 emissions of just 25g/km it's in a very low company car tax bracket. Performance is strong, too, with 0-62mph coming in 7.6sec, making it our pick of the range.
