The Audi A3 Saloon is tidy in the bends, comfortable and well equipped, making it a very competitive option against its closest rivals, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes A-Class Saloon. However, the A4 is worth the extra if you can afford it, because it’s quieter and has a classier and more practical interior. Likewise, the BMW 3 Series betters the A3 in those areas, and it's also more enjoyable to drive.get the best price
The trimSee full equipment
This limited-edition trim includes 19in alloy wheels, black styling details inside and out and Matrix LED headlights, which adapt the main beams so they can remain on and not dazzle other drivers.
The engineSee full engine specs
This 1.5-litre 148bhp 35 TFSI petrol is our pick of the range. It’s cheaper than the 35 TDI but still gutsy throughout the rev range, pulling handsomely from around 200rpm and spinning freely all the way to the engine's red line. It'll hit the magic 0-60mph time in around 8.0sec (with a manual gearbox) and can average over 40mpg in the real world – both better figures than the BMW 218i Gran Coupe.
