Audi A4 Avant 35 TDI Technik 5dr S Tronic Review

The model
Read full reviewIf you want a relatively compact estate with a premium badge, there are lots of things to like about the A4 Avant – particularly if opt for our recommended 35 TDI diesel engine, which is frugal yet punchy, and Technik trim, which is relatively well-equipped. Much bigger estates are available for considerably less money, the best of which is the Skoda Superb Estate, while the BMW 3 Series Touring is as classy as the A4 Avant but more fun to drive.
The trim
See full equipmentTechnik trim gives you all you really need and is our pick. You get 17in alloy wheels, power-folding door mirrors, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, heated front seats, front and rear climate control, cruise control, keyless start, supple Comfort Dynamic suspension, four-way lumbar adjustment, 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats, front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, LED headlights, a 12.3in digital instrument screen, a 10.1in infotainment touchscreen, a DAB radio, eight speakers, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto and sat-nav. To make life a little easier, there’s also an electric tailgate and an electrically retracting load cover, too. That's not a bad tally.
The engine
See full engine specsThis is our pick of the A4 range. The 161bhp 35 TDI has decent low-end urgency and is brisk enough for most situations. 0-62mph is rattled off in 8.5sec and officially it will average just under 60mpg. It's also RDE2 compliant.
