Review

The latest Audi A4 looks sharp on the outside and has one of the highest quality interiors in the executive car class. The BMW 3 Series is a slightly better all-rounder and offers keen drivers greater thrills behind the wheel, but the A4 is the more comfortable choice if you opt for our favourite Sport Edition trim. It's a fine car.

S line has lowered suspension and 19in wheels, so it's firmer-riding than some might like. It also adds leather and Alcantara seats, privacy glass, high-beam assist and even more overtly sporty styling inside and out.

This is our pick of the range. With 201bhp the 40 TFSI offers a considerable performance boost over the 35 TFSI (0-62mph takes 7.1sec) without pushing up running costs too much – officially it averages around 45mpg. And it comes with a slick S tronic automatic gearbox.
