The A5 Sportback blends coupé-like styling with decent practicality. If you want something that's efficient to run, comfortable and refined, with a beautifully executed interior, it's one of the best coupés for the cash. It also handles well, but if you prefer thrilling and playful rear-wheel-drive dynamics, we'd opt for the excellent BMW 4 Series instead.

S line adds more aggressive looks, 19in alloy wheels, Matrix LED headlights, privacy glass, part-leather and suede seats, and stiffer, lowered suspension.

The 148bhp 35 TFSI (0-62mph in 9.1sec) needs to be worked fairly hard to build speed in a hurry but officially it is capable of averaging nearly 45mpg. We'd go for the 40 TFSI is you want a petrol, though.
