The Audi A6 Avant is a comfortable, quiet and technologically advanced estate that's beautifully built. A BMW 5 Series Touring is better to drive and has a more user-friendly infotainment system, though.

Entry-level Sport trim gives you all the features you really need, with electric front seats, four-way lumbar adjustment, LED headlights, 18in alloy wheels, leather seat trim, dual-zone climate control, front and rear parking sensors, ambient LED interior lighting, a powered tailgate and keyless start. The standard infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, sat-nav, Bluetooth, a DAB radio, an 10.1in touchscreen and a punchy 10-speaker stereo.

A more powerful 261bhp version of the 2.0-litre petrol found in the 40 TFSI, the 45 TFSI comes exclusively with quattro four-wheel drive to help it crack 0-62mph in 6.0sec dead. Economy is mid-high thirties, though.
