In the ultra-competitive arena of the premium family car, the BMW 1 Series is right up there, but not the best – that's the Audi A3. It delivers a good blend of driver appeal with decent ride comfort, along with fine practicality, but its main strengths are a top-notch interior and a brilliant infotainment system.

M Sport adds 18in alloy wheels, more distinctive bumpers, stiffer M Sport suspension (which offers the best ride and handling balance), and a few more luxuries, such as power-folding door mirrors, heated front seats and leather trim. So if you are buying a 1 Series because for its premium or sportier flavour, M Sport makes the most sense.
