While the BMW M135's engine, gearbox and straight-line performance don't stand out in the hot-hatch class, it gets the handling just right. It's agile and often playful, just as a hot hatch should be. The VW Golf R has a better ride and handling balance but doesn't come close to the M135 for interior quality.
The trim
Our recommended trim includes firmer suspension and M Sport styling touches plus 18in alloy wheels and more luxurious seat materials. That's on top of all the infotainment tech you get with entry-level Sport models.
The engine
This mid-range engine option is a 215bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol unit. It has four-wheel drive and can do 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. Like the 120, it’s a mild hybrid.
